9 Carpet Care Tips

Once you’ve made the decision to invest in new carpet, you want to keep it looking like new. The best way to do this is to hire a carpet cleaning professional at least twice a year for a thorough cleaning. But, there are steps you can take on your own to extend the life of your carpet. Check out our top nine carpet care tips below.

1. Always Remove Your Shoes When Entering from Outside

This may seem obvious, but shoes can track in dust, dander, dirt, and mud. Try to keep a pair of clean slippers near the front door to avoid stepping on the carpet with your shoes on.

2. Place a Shoe Rack Near the Door

A shoe rack can serve as a reminder for your family and guests to take their shoes off. Keeping your shoes on a shoe rack near the door not only helps with organization, but it protects your carpets, too.

3. Place a Walk Off Mat in Front of the Door

Walk off mats are great because they combine a “scraper” mat with absorbent textiles which help prevent dirt and dust from ever getting onto your carpet.

4. Vacuum Often

Make sure you are vacuuming your carpet regularly to prevent soil from embedding itself in the carpet further. We would even recommend vacuuming high traffic areas daily, and moderate traffic areas two to three times a week.

5. Be Aware of UV Rays

To reduce the chances of the color fading in your carpets or upholstery, be aware of harmful UV rays. When it’s sunny outside, make sure you don’t keep your blinds or curtains open for long periods at a time to keep your carpet from fading.

6. Attend to Spills Immediately

The longer a spill sits on your carpet, the more difficult it is to remove the stain. The quicker you act to remove the stain, the easier it is to clean. The chance of removing a spot or stain is 75% greater if the spill is attended to immediately.

7. Blot, Don’t Rub

When you rub a stain, it causes the particles to get pushed into the carpet fibers, which leads to a breakdown of these fibers. For most food or beverage and pet accidents, blot as much of the liquid or debris up with a dry cloth or paper towel. Use a white terry cloth towel and press it deeply into the spill, blotting it dry.

8. Use Water

If you’ve already tried blotting the stain and it is still present, apply clear warm water and blot it dry again. If clear water does not do the trick, try using a solution of mild, non-bleaching detergent that does not cause excessive foaming.

9. Bring in a Professional

Stubborn stains may require professional extraction. Sometimes a deep spill will appear to have been removed only to recur days, or even weeks later. Consult with a professional cleaner like Bullseye for deep cleaning solutions.
